As an Indigenous Relations Lead working in the Environment team at Pomerleau Construction, you will play a key role in identifying, defining and deploying initiatives and strategies to establish sustainable and respectful relationships with Canada’s Indigenous communities. Supporting our work in building large-scale building and infrastructure projects - ranging from $1.5 million to upwards of $1 billion – you will ensure the implementation of a strategy that allows Indigenous Peoples to fully participate in Pomerleau’s operations in collaboration with the diverse departments.


What You Will Do

  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with the Identified Indigenous Groups;
  • Work with the Identified Indigenous Groups regarding contracting, employment and training opportunities;
  • Liaise with the client's Representative and jointly participate in meetings with the Identified Indigenous Groups;
  • Implement and update the Indigenous construction monitoring opportunities and working with the Environmental Manager to ensure monitoring requirements are met;
  • Develop, administer and manage the day-to-day implementation of the Indigenous Engagement and Participation Plan;
  • Facilitate the delivery of Indigenous cultural sensitivity and/or awareness training to all Key Individuals;
  • Undertake track and report in relation to the implementation of the Indigenous Engagement and Participation Plan and the Indigenous Requirements;
  • Update the Indigenous Engagement and Participation Plan in collaboration with the Identified Indigenous Groups;
  • Provide strategic advice on maintaining relationships with Indigenous people, communities, and organizations;
  • Identify, track, and monitor issues, concerns and needs identified by Indigenous communities, clients and partners and determine how Pomerleau can help them build mutually beneficial relationships and capacity building programs;
  • Supervise the work of the Contractor Indigenous Coordinator.

This role could be for you if you have

  • A University degree in engineering, sustainable development, human science, community development, Indigenous studies, or a similar field.
  • At least eight (8) years of recent experience on major projects in the following areas:
    • optimizing project design based on feedback from Indigenous nations or external stakeholders
    • working with Indigenous Groups to provide contracting, employment and/or training opportunities
    • establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with Indigenous Groups
  • Proven skill and experience in building relationships with Indigenous Groups in Ontario
  • Knowledge of First Nation history, cultures, and forms of governance.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven skill and experience in effective communication, conflict resolution and organization.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • The ability to coordinate and manage Indigenous consultants.
  • An aptitude for working in a multidisciplinary team in the field of construction.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage priorities and autonomy.
  • A cooperative approach and leadership skills.
  • A sense of initiative, curiosity, creativity, and flexibility.
  • A deep commitment to building respectful and sustainable relationships and combat all forms of racism and discrimination against Indigenous people.
  • Availability for travel in the Toronto area.
  • Willingness to travel to First Nation communities.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
