Job Summary

The School of Nursing’s MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway Liaison is responsible for supporting the recruitment, retention and success of self-identifying Indigenous students in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway in alignment with UBC Policy SC-7 Discrimination Policy

The Indigenous Wellness Pathway Liaison is a connection point that brings resources (mentors, funding opportunities, culturally safe wellbeing supports) to self-Identifying Indigenous students

The Indigenous Wellness Pathway Liaison serves as a conduit for anonymous student feedback to enable the School of Nursing to make nimble, responsive, positive change in their MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway


Organizational Status

The School of Nursing is a part of the Faculty of Health & Social Development at UBC Okanagan. The School of Nursing’s MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway Liaison reports to the Director of the School of Nursing and works with the School of Nursing Graduate Program Coordinator and the Manager, Strategic and Academic Initiatives for the Faculty of Health & Social Development.

This position works independently, with initiative and considerable autonomy under the general supervision of the Director.

This position consults regularly with the Faculty of Health & Social Development’s graduate program assistants, the College of Graduate Studies, Indigenous Programs & Services, UBCO Indigenous Elders-in-Residence in committee meetings, gatherings, visits and personal/one-on-one relationships


Work Performed

  • Considers and supports culturally safe wellbeing programming for all self-identifying Indigenous students in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway well as holistic (emotional, mental, Spiritual) programming to meet the unique needs of self-identifying Indigenous students in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway
  • Builds and maintains trusting relationships, partnerships and teams of UBC and external resources specific to needs of self-identifying Indigenous students in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway (for example, The College of Graduate Studies, The Centre for Teaching & Learning Okanagan, Indigenous Programs and Services, UBCO Student Wellness, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, the UBC Equity & Inclusion Office, Early Alert Office)
  • Prepares reports, publications and other documents as required, and may be asked to sit on and participate on committees and working groups across campus.
  • Brings student inquiries, questions and concerns to graduate program staff and works together to address and resolve them, including creating or modifying policies and procedures within the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway
  • Collects and analyzes data; coordinates changes in program procedures, processes, and policies.
  • Builds relationships with Elders and Indigenous communities and ensures protocols are being respected and followed by School of Nursing staff and faculty
  • Works in close partnership with campus partners
  • Builds and maintains trusting relationship with MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway students throughout the entire student life cycle (pre-admission, admission, registration, degree progression, graduation, post-graduation to provide a culturally safe space and place where students can share any concerns, issues, or ideas including matters that relate to their learning
  • Supports MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway students in crisis, either personal or academic, and advocates for academic options and personal support given by services on campus
  • Researches and builds partnerships and relationships with other Faculties and campus units to develop, maintain, and review and improve new initiatives.
  • Supports the academic success and retention of MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway students by collaborating with School of Nursing faculty members, staff, and campus partners to develop programming and identify opportunities for partnerships to support Indigenous students
  • Plans and coordinates gatherings and activities designed to improve the student experience and assist students with the cultural and academic transition to UBC Okanagan.
  • Participates in SON Graduate Programs Introduction Sessions and similar recruitment events to build relationships with prospective self-identifying Indigenous students in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway


Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position requires a person that is culturally safe in their way of being, knowing and doing. The work performed by the MSN Indigenous Wellness Liaison directly impacts the experience and learning of current students, prospective students, faculty, and staff involved in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway.

The MSN Indigenous Wellness Liaison ensures that the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway is delivered in a culturally safe and culturally appropriate way, ensuring positive outcomes and experiences for Indigenous students’ overall wellbeing in the program. 

Supporting students in crisis or in need of support can profoundly improve their access to necessary support services that support student’s wellbeing. Indigenous student recruitment and retention is a major strategic goal of the School of Nursing, and this role is essential to fulfilling the School’s mandate, and to ensure MSN students are fully supported as well and their voices are included in this whole process. It is only when we are able to truly provide a culturally safe experience to our MSN students that they will in turn be able to provide culturally competent care and leadership in the healthcare system during their studies and in their careers after graduation.


Supervision Received
Reports to the Director of the School of Nursing. Works closely with the MSN Graduate Program Coordinator, the Manager, Strategic and Academic Initiatives, the Graduate Program Assistants in the Faculty of Health and Social Development, and the self-identifying Indigenous students in the MSN Indigenous Wellness Pathway

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred

  • Masters’ degree, especially in Nursing, would be considered an asset
  • Must be culturally safe in their ways of being, knowing and doing
  • Experience with building and maintaining trusting relationships with Elders, community, students, faculty, and staff
  • Knowledge of UBC systems and processes would be an asset
